It's Only Money

See Michelle Malkin for news of the Republican moral victory. Not one of them voted for the Bacon Explosion Bill. But 11 Democrats voted against it. That's bipartisanship we can believe in.

Pundit and I were talking about the Democrat spending orgy. I was trying to understand the mentality that goes into this kind of outrageously irresponsible legislation. These men and women can't possibly run their families and businesses this way. They'd be penniless, out on the street with nothing, if they did. (Though I guess even responsibility for one's own financial decisions, e.g., buying a house you can't afford, is becoming passe - just get a bailout on that big mortgage.)

But in the world most of us live in, adults weigh the pluses and minuses of large expenditures, sometimes even delaying gratification. The phrases "We can't afford it," "We don't have the money right now," or even "Let's save up for that," are still used in families, aren't they?

But Pundit had the answer: the money our legislators are spending isn't their own, and it has no limit. The prudence center of the weaker mind is apparently wiped clean when confronted with this bottomless pot of gold. Throw in the facts that they have no idea how their actions will affect the economy, and that they are blithely burdening the next generation or two with a trillion dollars of debt, and it's hard to respect these people.

But hey, it's only money.
