Steynettes

Hyacinth Girl gives me way too much credit. She wrote this:

Jill came up with a great moniker for lady Steyn fans: Steynette. Doesn’t that sound très retro? I picture a hot, repressed secretary just dying to let her hair down.
When you're done lolling, check out my Steynettes on the right sidebar. Or never mind -- here they are, with the accompanying photo. And just for the record, I stole 'Steynette' from the Girl on the Right.

There's a story behind the above photo. I found it in various locales, but in one very special, very obscure corner of the internet, she was identified as an opera singer. But I've lost the reference and can't find it now. Gak. If and when I ever do, I'll post it.

*Update: found her -- scroll down.

One thing's for sure, though. She doesn't look repressed.

Maybe this would work?

I love that moment in the old movies when the mousy young heroine demurely removes her glasses and lets her hair down, and the hero gasps, "Why, Millicent . . . you're . . . you're . . . beautiful!"

*Update: Her name is Amelita Galli-Curci. She was an Italian opera singer. Here's another photo:

  1. The lower one is the only one that conveys repressed sexuality. I suspect the other lady teaches first grade and has 14 beloved cats.

  2. Pardon my ignorance! I am apparently an idiot. ;) As for the imagery, everything for me is fetish-y, if possible. I like the bottom picture the bestest.

  3. Perhaps "fangurrl" is more appropriate for me then. With that particular term, I envision ComiCon, tight-lacing, and cheap rockabilly retro.

I just re-discovered her true identity and will update post.

  5. Yeah, I'm thinking when my daughter called me fangurrl it wasn't a compliment. But I bit my tongue and said nothing about a certain person's fixation on that Stargate guy with the glasses.

  6. April, I hope you know I don't expect anyone, even blood relatives, to scroll down and look at all my trivia.
