The arrogance

The residents of the White House (the people's house now, you know) are getting it while they can.

POLITICO hears from several sources that the President has asked Paramount Pictures for his own screening of the new "Star Trek" film in the White House.
I couldn't care less if various goofballs are pushing the Obama-as-Spock meme. He can be anything and everything, no matter how contradictory, to his mindless followers. Last I checked, he had "swagga." Now he's "cool and analytical"? Whatever.

But the absolute, over-the-top arrogance of "asking" for a private, personal screening -- isn't that a bit much, coming from this man of the people? Will he fly the pizza chef in for this one, or serve the $100/pound beef?

*Update:
Commenters have helpfully pointed out that other presidents have had private film screenings in the White House, and that I am an idiot. Of course they're correct. And having a screening is no doubt less expensive (belt-tightening, you know) and less disruptive to people's lives than shutting down half of DC, or flying to Chicago with an entourage and shutting it down, just to see a movie and go out to dinner.

So maybe the Obamas like to wear $540 dollar shoes to the food bank, dine at the most expensive restaurant in DC, and serve $100/pound beef at their Wednesday night soirees. These things don't mean the Obamas are nouveau riche elitists.

I guess the word "asking" rubbed me the wrong way. When Obama "asks" private business for something, they know the consequences of saying no. (I know that's not relevant in this case, since Paramount would no doubt love to get the added publicity for the film, and Obama isn't telling them how to run their business, yet.)

I'll admit I can't stand the guy. I think Thomas Sowell nails the Obama character in his column from Nov. 1, 2008: Ego and Mouth: Obama's Trademark.

  1. Don't be an idiot.

    Obama is not the first President to have had movies run in the White House screening room.

  2. I'm sure that's the case. I still think he's an arrogant hypocritical phony.

  3. Your beloved Ronald Reagan had private screenings at the White House. During Back to the Future, he even had the projectionist stop the film and replay the part where Doc Brown jokes about Reagan being President in 1985. How arrogant and elitist of him!

  5. CC - thanks :)
    Others - I am often an idiot. The movie screening (but not the extra chefs or $100 beef) wasn't the best example. But his pretense of being a 'regular' guy, and his urgings of belt-tightening and sacrifice, ring false to me in light of his actions.

    In any event, it's clear that Obama has a very healthy ego.

  6. Hmm. "Private, personal screening". You mean like when you get a movie from NetFlix and watch it all by yourself?

  7. You would have to be a moron to see all that Obama has demanded in recent weeks, and the way he has conducted himself and not see this as one more ego trip.

    $400,000 for a photo to put on his wall, one that terrified enough citizens to cost New York a million dollar loss in productivity;
    Threatening citizens to get his way;
    Closing Normandy so he wouldn't have to answer questions.

    Anyone trying to make excuses for Obama at this point is nothing but a drooling, cretinous cult member.
