A Washington Post-ABC News poll finds support for Obama and especially his health care reform plan continue to erode. Poll results here.
In another poll, Rasmussen finds that Americans are more concerned with cost than with universality of coverage:
Sixty-one percent (61%) of voters nationwide say that cost is the biggest health care problem facing the nation today. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 21% believe the lack of universal health insurance coverage is a bigger problem. Now is the time for people to make themselves heard to their representatives on this.Only 10% believe the quality of care is the top concern, and two percent (2%) point to the inconvenience factor of dealing with the current medical system.
Given a choice between health care reform and a tax hike or no health care reform and no tax hike, 47% would prefer to avoid the tax hike and do without reform. Forty-one percent (41%) take the opposite view.
The opposition is stronger when asked about a choice between health care reform that would require changing existing health insurance coverage or no health care reform and no change from current coverage. In that case, voters oppose reform by a 54% to 32% margin.
Back to the Post poll: Poll Shows Obama Slipping on Key Issues: Approval Rating on Health Care Falls Below 50 Percent
Barely more than half approve of the way he is handling unemployment, which now tops 10 percent in 15 states and the District.Ouch. That rise in disapproval is sharp.
Since April, approval of Obama's handling of health care has dropped from 57 percent to 49 percent, with disapproval rising from 29 percent to 44 percent. Obama still maintains a large advantage over congressional Republicans in terms of public trust on the issue, even as the GOP has closed the gap.
Support for new spending is tempered by flagging confidence on Obama's plan for the economy. Fifty-six percent are confident that his programs will reap benefits, but that is down from 64 percent in March and from 72 percent just before he took office six months ago. More now say they have no confidence in the plan than say they are very confident it will work. Among independents and Republicans, confidence has decreased by 20 or more points; it has dropped seven points among Democrats.Approval of Obama's handling of the overall economy stands at 52 percent, with 46 percent disapproving, and, for the first time in his presidency, more Americans strongly disapprove of his performance on the economy than strongly approve. Last month, 56 percent gave him positive marks on this issue.

And if you haven't yet, read this column on the Carteresque direction Obama's presidency has taken. Ramming unpopular and destructive policies down our throats won't solve the country's problems or lead to political success for Obama. May he crash and burn before we do.
