In case you haven't already seen it here's the link to Backyard Conservative Anne Leary's story of her chance encounter with Bill Ayers, who, unprompted, tells her this:
I wrote Dreams From My Father. I said, oh, so you admit it. He said--Michelle asked me to. I looked at him. He seemed eager. He's about my height, short. He went on to say--and if you can prove it, we can split the royalties. So I said, stop pulling my leg. Horrible thought. But he came again--I really wrote it, the wording was similar. I said I believe you probably heavily edited it. He said--I wrote it. I said--why would I believe you, you're a liar.Yeah, it sounds pretty crazy. But we're talking about Bill Ayers here. I can think of more than one reason why he might want to out Obama. Or maybe he's just playing head games with one right-wing blogger or thumbing his nose at all Obama deniers. Or something else. His mind works in unfathomable ways.
He had no answer to that. Just looked at me. Then he turned and walked off, and said again his bit about my proving it and splitting the proceeds.
Regardless, I find it a lot more plausible that Ayers (or someone else) wrote Dreams than did the verbally pedestrian Obama. Neither in his cliche-heavy prepared speeches nor in his plodding extemporaneous utterances does he ever show a hint of the voice one hears in Dreams. (Related posts on Obama's lousy speeches here and here.)
What no one is saying is that they can't imagine Obama lying about this.
William Jacobson writes, "I think we are entitled to know whose Dream it was, since we are living the nightmare now." But no clarification is likely to come from Obama's camp; they'll shower ridicule on anyone who asks the question and then find an invisible subtext of racism in its implications.
