I couldn't care less about David Shuster's Twitter war with anyone. But his attempt to tar conservatives with the beliefs of the deranged haters from the Westboro Baptist Church is an outrage. The P&P family had its own little encounter with these toxic wackos yesterday outside the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception; we had no idea (till we read Shuster) that we were somehow complicit in their hate. Au contraire, we were one of their targets.
There isn't a human being on the planet, except their fellow members, who wouldn't be offended by them. They've got us all covered. The two women and three children we saw yesterday emitted torrents of hate, verbally and visually, toward God, Jews, the military, gays, Obama, and especially Catholics. Each woman held four signs, two in each hand, with charming slogans on both sides. Our favorite sign was "God Hates You." We kept forgetting that as we made our way through the beautiful Crypt Church below the Shrine.
I'm grieved to hear that they appeared outside a school. Being in the physical presence of these people is a harsh introduction to evil and ugliness. My kids had never experienced anything quite like it before. We've been talking about what it must be like to be immersed in hatefulness, all day, every day.
The sign below is a very mild one. These poor children.
A man in the Shrine's parking lot shook his head at the haters and remarked, "We need to pray for them. They don't know what they're doing."
Shuster's attempt to connect these people to conservatives is despicable but not very surprising, considering his history.
The Westboro Baptist Church is telling the Obama daughters that God is their "enemy."
The Kansas-based far-right church known for its outrageous choices of protest venues picketed outside the private school attended by first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama on Monday morning, and in the process got embroiled in an angry war of words with an MSNBC anchor.
"God is your enemy," read one sign at the event outside of Sidwell Friends School, as captured in a photo by Megan Phelps-Roper, granddaughter of church founder Fred Phelps.
The church is known for its signature protest sign that reads "God hates fags."
MSNBC anchor David Shuster described Monday's Westboro church protest as "beyond the pale."
"Hopefully, some of the more rational conservatives/Republicans will condemn this stuff today," he wrote on his Twitter account.
Explain to me again what any of this has to do with conservatives or Republicans?? Being human, we're as much a target of their hate as anyone else.
We need to pray for Shuster, because he doesn't know what he's doing.
*Update: Bravo to Dan Riehl who lets Shuster have it.

Turns my stomach to see that cute little girl being taught to hate at such a young age. Why do people get children involved in their politics and terrible beliefs?
They don't sound like any church with which I'm familiar, including Baptists. They've appropriated the name, but not the Christianity. Tragic.
I hate to use the word "baptist" in association with them, just trying to ID them by their name. The signs, especially about God hating everyone, were more Satanic than anything else. They had a little boy holding up a "fag" sign. And one woman shouted the entire time, things you wouldn't repeat. Very, very ugly.
They were outside the Shrine??!! Anything in particular drawing them there, or were they just in town and decided to stop by?
There was nothing special going on that I know of. I think that was it -- they just happened to be in the neighborhood and wanted to say "Hi, and by the way, God hates you!"
