Boxer: Viagra is the equivalent of abortion

We see that she's able to speak and (presumably) dress herself, so she can't possibly be as mentally challenged as she sounds here, can she?

I guess she's saying that abortions facilitate sex for women in the same way that Viagra facilitates sex for men? Well then, let there be unlimited Viagra and abortions for all! This is supposed to be a free country, right?

Text:

BOXER: There’s nothing in this amendment that says if a man some days wants to buy Viagra, for example, that his pharmaceutical coverage cannot cover it, that he has to buy a rider. I wouldn’t support that. And they shouldn’t support going after a woman using her own private funds for her reproductive health care. Is it fair to say to a man you’re going to have to buy a rider to buy Viagra and this will be public information that could be accessed? No, I don’t support that. I support a man’s privacy, just as I support a woman’s privacy. (Courtesy of ACLL)
Aside from the absurd equivalence of abortion with Viagra, this raises the question: will Viagra be covered under a public option? I'm not crazy about the idea of paying for some guy's prescription. If this is such a private matter, couldn't he pay for it himself?

Maybe Sen. Boxer should have included treatment of STDs in her analogy. That would make more sense to President Obama, who, you may recall, sees babies and venereal diseases as equivalent punishments:
“Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old,” he said. “I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. I don’t want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn’t make sense to not give them information.”

There is no question that Barbie Boxer is mentally disabled.
If there is a stipulation that mentally incompetent citizens may not vote why does this not apply to the qualifications to serve in Congress?

I almost forgot; the part about being punished by a baby is a real gem.
It speaks volumes about the state of our society when a child is considered a punishment. If you really don't want the poor, helpless infant let someone else take care of it but please don't punish the baby by aborting her/him.
We have a VERY lengthy appeals process for people on death row and we have only a 30 minute or whatever it is decision making process at Planned Parenthood clinicsd for a woman who has indicted, convicted and sentenced her unborn and totally innocent child to an inhumane and painful death.
That is one of the most perverse acts of injustice in our society today.

Viagra (and its cousins) should not be covered under any taxpayer financed health plan - Medicare, Medicaid, ObamaCare, etc. But the pharmaceutical companies know a gravy train when the see one so they lobbied Congress to include Viagra in Medicare.

Another absurdity - Medicaid covers in vitro fertilization - so people on welfare can have more kids at our expense. Those costs can top $40,000. Yet adoption expenses are almost never covered by government programs, presumably because encouraging adoption would cut into the profits of the abortion-industrial-complex.

If you want privacy, then don't let the government get involved in healthcare. It's amazing to me that liberals claim a Constitutional right to privacy when abortion is the issue, but claim zero privacy in other medical procedures.

Digby tried back in early November to make the same illogical agrument. http://carolyntackettscloset.blogspot.com/2009/11/lefty-wit.html

I agree with Chris that Viagra shouldn't be covered but Ma'am Boxer comparing viagra and abortion is absolutely cringe worthy. Shows that her moral compass is permanently broken.

Good post.

But what a loathsome and immoral woman that Senator is. To equate the murder of the innocent with enhancement of a middle aged person's sex life is disgusting!

And I am disgusted by that comment of the Big O's. It's interesting that the assumption underlying it is that his daughters will be sexually active by 16. Talk about the lowest common denominator. And to talk about a human being, a baby, as a punishment is foul. Sorry to rant but it staggers me when people who commit genocide upon millions of unborn think that I am inconsistent when I am for the death penalty for convicted murderers, or I am for war to defend our nation or right wrongs in the world. It seems to me that those who are "liberal" on the issue are basically bullies. All for killing peole who can't fight back, but squeamish about unpleasant but at times necessary violence to protect society.

I know this is not necessarily what you are looking for here, but Viagra (or syldenifil (sp?)) has many more uses than just allowing a man to get an erection. The way it works is to decrease blood pressure (and therefore increase blood flow to the body). Obviously, this allows for an erection, but you can very quickly see that it's primary function is not for ED (though it is obviously sold that way, as that sells the drug more readily, and it is effective in treating that problem), but for high blood pressure. In fact, the first drug prescribed for Pulmonary hypertension is Viagra as it is the most effective at reducing pulmonary pressures (my newborn son was put on it 3 1/2 years ago when his pulmonary pressures were not allowing blood to pass to his lungs from his heart). So, not allowing Viagra (because people have come to equate it with horny old men) is inappropriate, she's right.

However, in the same vein, as mentioned already, there is only one use for abortion and that is murder. Obviously, something that cannot even be closely related to the effects of Viagra. Apparently Senator Boxer needs to do some more homework...but then again, that would just be expecting too much from her and it sounds almost like a close connection when you equate the embarassment of ED and an unplanned pregnancy. How's about we stick to the facts Ms. Boxer?

As Wayne points out, Viagra has more than one use. But at the same time he fails to acknowledge that abortion is also a medical necessity to save the mother's life. Fortunately this is rare today because of medical advances and often both the mother and child can be saved.

That doesn't mean that Boxer is not a moron.

Thanks for your comments. I know that Viagra has legitimate medical uses but I'm not so sure Barbara has a clue that it's anything other than, er, an enhancement for above-mentioned old men.
