Someone tell Tina Fey that some of her fans are conservatives

I don't think she understands that. There may even have been some in the Kennedy Center audience, judging from this report:

In her acceptance speech, Fey touched on her best-known bit -- her Palin imitation --and offered some mock hands-across-the-political-divide commentary. The rise of conservative women in politics, she said pointedly, is good for all women, "unless you don't want to pay for your own rape kit . . . unless you're a lesbian who wants to get married to your partner of 20 years . . . [or] unless you believe in evolution."

The lines played first to nervous laughter and then to not much laughter at all.
My husband and I like 30 Rock, as do some of our conservative friends. Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin are smart and funny in it. Would they be surprised to hear us say that? I don't hate Tina for her political views or for doing her Palin thing on SNL (though I think she's a lot funnier as Liz Lemon). It's too bad Tina doesn't seem to value this segment of her fan base.

*Update: Welcome Instapundit and Michelle Malkin readers!*

**Thanks, Michelle, for pointing this out: Tina Fey recycles Palin rape kit lie.

  1. I'm so sick of the smug self righteousness of entertainers these past few years. I'm running out of shows I can watch, movies I can see or music I can listen to without being reminded that these people, who have never even met me, hate me because I am not a leftist.

Christians, Conservatives and fat people are the only folks who the rules of political correctness do not apply, you can just say whatever you want about them, but God forbid you say anything even remotely honest or not quite complementary about the favored groups such as gays, muslims or illegal alien invaders - you'll get practically crucified for that.

  2. I'm not even remotely interested in watching anything Tina Fey has anything to do with.

The same is true for many obnoxious Hollywood Leftists. Leonardo DiCaprio is a very talented actor. Normally, I would love to watch almost anything he appeared in. But, owing to his incredibly arrogant and ignorant political rants, I can no longer even stand to look at him.

  4. A few reactions:

30 Rock is ok, but the rapid fire banter is so unrealistic that I can't take it for more than a few minutes.

Isn't that joke recycled from the 2008 election season? She needs new writers.

Of course you don't hate her for being liberal, you're a conservative and that means being more open minded and non-judgmental.

She bugs me for basically the same reason most liberals do (FWIW, because of my location of residence, almost every person in my social circle is liberal, and there's not much I can do about it)--her habit of injecting politics into all situations no matter how non-political. And the politics are always boring and conventional and usually ignorant to boot--these people never have anything interesting or surprising to say and yet they can't help saying it.

  5. It is clear she does not want me as a fan, so my only response is to honor her request and decline to watch anything she's in.

I have done that already, and as a result, avoid her show and the majority of TV and movies. I'm not missing much at all, however. With Netflix and Hulu, etc., I don't need them anymore.

I'm sure they'll do as well as Anderson Cooper or Olbermann, carving up that smaller pie of the far left.

  6. Why does she have to tailor her material to cater to people she hates?

Conservatives hate liberals -- notwithstanding tim maguire's idiotic assertion, above, that conservatives are "more open minded and non-judgmental" -- and feel free to say so at every turn.

But Fey has to suppress her opinions so you'll enjoy her show more? Holy God.

I love Tina Fey, or anybody else capable of recognizing that Sarah Palin is an airhead.

  7. I'm thinking that whomever voted to give her an award was making more of a political statement than really honoring her relatively skimpy body of work. Her "flagship" project - 30 Rock - has yet to conclude its run and she still owes me $7.50 for Baby Mama. But I think this was more about her Sarah Palin impression than anything else. Her acceptance speech and the embarrassed reception to it may illustrate this point.

  8. @JimH: I agree. Even she thought she wasn't further along enough in her career to receive a lifetime achievement award.

@darrell: It seems to me that she lives in an insulated world and might be surprised to find out that, 1) she has fans who aren't liberals; and 2) conservatives are able to get her jokes.

  9. @darrell: "Why does she have to tailor her material to cater to people she hates?""

She doesn't. And those she hates should honor her request and change the channel.

We don't want her to feel icky about being watched by those she despises. I'm sure she'll do fine without me.

  10. If any conservative is a fan of that smirking no-talent gorgon, then he deserves the abuse he gets--if for no other reason than as retribution for his extreme poor taste.

What we're talking about here is entertainers insulting half of their audience. So, Darrell, I'll bite - name me a current actor who drip Baldwin/Fey-level disdain for liberals in his/her public pronouncements.

  12. I no longer watch actors who double as political activists (Fey, Baldwin, Garofalo et al) because its spoiled whatever character they are trying to portray. I can't even enjoy Diehard without being reminded what a tool Danny Glover is.

Its too bad, because they were very entertaining before they prostituted their art for politics.

And I agree Jim - Tina Fey is being rewarded for damaging Palin, not for her acting.

You can watch the movie or download it from the above link.

  14. @darrell: "Why does she have to tailor her material to cater to people she hates?""

She doesn't - because she's a political activist, not an actress.

OTOH, a REAL actress like Jodie Foster doesn't let her private politics interfere with her work. She can bring characters to life without each one being typecast by her liberalism. Thats why I pay good money to see her perform, despite the fact that we would never agree on anything political. She's an actress.

Whereas Tina Fey is just another political hack.

  15. @M. Simon: Thanks. Not sure where I'd put a link to HGF -- my sidebars are already a bit overloaded.

You can also watch it on Hulu. http://www.hulu.com/watch/63243/his-girl-friday

Does anyone happen to know what Cary Grant's political views were? Me neither.

Of course they would not be surprised. They know that they are smart and funny, so no surprise there.

They may be surprised to learn that you understand what they are saying, though, as when parent realize that S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G words no-longer shields their children from adult topics.

Because they feel that they are the grown-ups, and you are a weak-minded child.

  17. Actually, Tina's parents are conservative. Think that came up in an interview. I've been a die hard fan of hers for over a decade and seldom detect that smugness. (while the above line is smug without being funny)

  18. I don't care how funny they think they or are. If they insult my beliefs: religious, political, or other, they are off my screen. I don't watch or buy anything connected with them because their insults have made it impossible for me to suspend disbelief and enjoy what they do. A little common sense would have told these pampered, unthinking parrots that their audience is diverse and insulting the audience is not a good idea. But the parrots never think; they just parrot lines written for them and they lose audience.

Dave: By answering in this calm, logical way you reveal yourself to be a right-wing conservative. Darrell has already given up on you.

  22. I'm reminded of a Soviet ingenue saying before coming out on stage: "If they don't clap, I'll sing about Stalin". In other words, when all else fails, resort to the old chestnut - in this case abuse Sarah Palin.

  23. "The rise of conservative women in politics, she said pointedly, is good for all women [...] unless you're a lesbian who wants to get married to your partner of 20 years"

Odd. She says this as if liberals have handled DOMA, Don't Ask Don't Tell, and relations with their spouses and subordinates in a preferable manner. C'mon Tina, tell us more how social acceptance is as simple as 'left vs right = right vs wrong.' Maybe you can dupe the gay and women voters into fruitlessly supporting your personal agenda for another election cycle. Then again, maybe not.

Just because your discrimination and stereotypes are against thought -- rather than sex, race, or orientation -- means you're not a bigot, right?

As a side note: who the hell knows lesbians who have been partners for 20 years? Seriously. I socialized (albeit tangentially) with that demographic for 15 years, and can think of only one couple thats been together for more than eight. Heck, there are plenty of running jokes *within* the community about how quickly live-in relationships form and fall apart. Let's hear some of those jokes, Tina, because they truly are funny commentary... and the community may appreciate your recognition and understanding more than the tired pandering of broken promises.

  24. Tina Fey can make herself up to look like the "ugly" twin of Sarah Palin, and has made a killing off of Sarah's celebrity. She resembles her from far away but close up it's just a big old mess.

Yes, Tina, some of use used to be avid SNL watchers until you people decided that it was open season on conservatives. So, screw you and most of your kind. Almost every show I've seen in the past year has incorporated some kind of slam on Sarah Palin.

  25. This bitter clinger would rather spend her hard-earned money on people who don't bash me and people like me on a daily or weekly basis. I'm funny like that.

  26. Palin actually believes in evolution.

She noted it doesn't explain the initial moment of creation, which is reasonable. A lot of people take this 'God created a world with evolution' idea.

I never really felt Tina's Palin impersonation was very insightful. I think there's only some basic physical resemblance and a few witty jokes. It looks like Fey doesn't bother to understand the people she's portraying. Which is no big deal to me... it's just SNL.

But wow is she being unfair and anti-feminist to delegitimize so many amazing trailblazing women with such dumb prejudice!

  27. Haven't you figured it out yet? She doesn't want you to be her fans. Recall Linda Ronstandt's statement that it upsets her when she finds that anyone in her audience isn't a lefty. That sentiment is matched by many in Hollywood.

They genuinely hate you but only a few come out and honestly admit it.

  28. I'll just keep DVRing 30 Rock and watching it more than a week later, fast-forwarding through the commercials. Thanks for the free entertainment, Cabletown!

  29. I'll keep watching "30 Rock", but I won't buy it. And I've dispensed with her more-politically-oriented appearances (like when she was SNL's guest host).
