Excellent news! I'm sure all those un- and under-employed Americans will be greatly relieved to hear that. So what's this magic solution?
This is not rocket science in terms of how we can create more jobs in this country. Let me just use an example like infrastructure. I don't know if anybody here recently has been to Asia, and you go to Shanghai or you go to Beijing or you go to Singapore. The notion that these guys have better airports than us is astonishing.Curse this big, messy, tough, democracy!
Well, the truth is now would be a great time for us to rebuild America. Interest rates are low. All these folks who worked in the housing bubble, construction workers and contractors, they're ready to work. They're willing to come on a job on time, under budget. Why, what a wonderful idea! And it will even reduce global warming, or cooling, or whatever. The main thing is to transform America!
We could transform America right now, rebuilding our roads and our bridges and our airports and also rebuilding a new infrastructure for the 21st century -- high-speed rail and a new generation of air traffic control that could actually save 15 percent of fuel costs and as a consequence reduce global warming. The problem is not that we can't do it. The problem is, is that we haven't shown the political will to do it.Setting aside the fact that we've already tossed zillions away in the first stimulus, let's review our situation. We're worse than broke, in debt beyond what we'll ever be able to pay; the economy is stagnant, our credit has been downgraded, and the stock market's crashing. And all Obama can think about is spending more trillions?
He's right -- it's not rocket science; it's criminal lunacy.
Look on his works, ye mighty, and despair.

8/9: I see that the excellent Beltway Confidential blog has put up a post with an identical headline (except for the exclamation mark). Let it be known that I posted mine first.

And it can't be rocket science since one of the few government programs that is being defunded is NASA.
ReplyDeleteMost of the jobs would be to activist lawyers suing on behalf of spotted salamanders, and then government lawyers defending those lawsuits, and with increased need, the Attorney General would need to hire more activist lawyers from the private sector to defend.... Whoops! Budget's gone.
ReplyDeleteLots of billable hours, and very little gets built.
Where does all of the tax from each gallon of gasoline go? They used to post on each pump how much per gallon you were paying in taxes, say 43 cents, but, I noticed the other day that it is no longer posted on the pump. Where has this money been going? Isn't that supposed to pay for "infrastructure"?
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that he thinks so easy almost three years in. I could really use a job.
