In a touching tribute to the slain Florida teen, Miami high schoolers looted their local Walgreens, because nothing says "rest in peace" or "you will be missed" like a swiped bag of chips:
In another moving memorial, Fr. Michael Pfleger used the young man's death as fuel for his decades-long ego trip at the expense of the Catholic Church and his own parishioners. The Daily Caller has the disturbing video, complete with a hooded dummy of Trayvon set up near the altar.
Spike Lee showed his respects with an ineffectual attempt to incite harassment, or worse, of George Zimmerman. He tweeted what he thought was Zimmerman's address. Turns out it wasn't Zimmerman's house at all, but rather the home of an elderly couple entirely unrelated to the "white hispanic." Oh well -- it's the thought that counts!
The couple has been forced to leave their home and stay in a hotel:
When William Zimmerman pleaded with the man who tweeted the address, the man responded, “Black power all day. No justice, no peace” along with an obscenity.Efforts to commodify and exploit Trayvon's death and whatever meaning his brief life may have had proceed apace. His mother is trying to trademark her son's name and the Obama campaign store is pushing the hoodies.
Not to be outdone, Rep. John Conyers and associates hosted Trayvon's parents on Capitol Hill for an extended grandstanding session.
The Daily Caller has published Trayvon's last month of tweets. They're abysmally sad. I'm hoping his life wasn't as ugly and degraded as his tweets make it appear.
The DC also reports that there were six witnesses to the struggle between Martin and Zimmerman:

No one's paying much attention to this detail:

When I was in college, shortly after the Matthew Shepherd murder, there was a group that held a memorial vigil to him. There was one girl (whom I knew slightly) who considered herself a lesbian, who, afterwards, hurt herself. I don't know if she went to the police herself, or if she did after friends of hers told her she should, but she claimed that she got beat up in one of the university parking lots coming back from this memorial. This made national news, as another "hate crime" in the vein of Matthew Shepherd. The police figured out that she had lied because a) her statements were inconsistent and b) all her injuries could be proved to be self-inflicted.
ReplyDeleteIf Zimmerman is lying about what happened that night, he's almost got to be some criminal genius because not only did he call the police before any of this happened, he seems to have injuries and evidence consistent with his story as well as witness accounts that also back him up. To put this together in time it took for the police to show up in the heightened emotions of the situation and have the story hold up for a month seems extremely unlikely if he were lying.
As for the girl at my university, she got kicked out, and even though it got mentioned in the news that she lied, I'm sure a lot more people remember the narrative sensationalism of the original story.
All of this ugly. Right down to the Daily Caller putting out that story about his tweets. It isn't their job to play defense attorney for Zimmerman. He has been defamed and called a racist without proof and context to the facts. Tayvon is now being treated the same way.

ReplyDeleteI've been posting on the Zimmerman shooting. As the facts come out, we are finding that once again the race baiters and opportunists were off base again. Not that it matters. ...Mr Jackson, and people like him, have focused on Zimmerman’s actions and deflected Martin’s. That is sad because if there is a lesson here, a moment where a society can say, “Damn there may be a problem here.” it isn’t on what Zimmerman did, it is on what Martin did.
Martin had many choices from his violent response to his choice of clothing. I believe that most MSM talking heads are barely competent and often mentally deficient. I also believe a number of politicians and activists and even lawyers fall into the same category. We have bred a lot of stupid in the past fifty years. It is that simple. We are shallow and look for bumper sticker answers to complex problems. This is one of those moments.
Why did it even occur to Martin to “thug up” instead of acting like a civilized man in a civilized nation? Why didn’t the concept of talking to the other man to ask what was happening escape him? Why is it that we see flash mob robberies of mostly young blacks, attacks on innocent people by young blacks, group of blacks memorializing Martin by robbing a store? Why is it that it isn’t roundly condemned by the authorities when the New Black Panthers put out a bounty on Zimmerman? What is happening to all youth and especially the blacks in America? And more importantly, as a nation how long can we tolerate it before it brings us to our knees?
With race baiters like Holder in an ultimate position of authority we are in serious trouble. This is the time that someone must stand up and place themselves squarely in the breach. It won’t be Jackon or Sharpton or Geraldo or Obama none of them have a stake in finding a path to peace. There is a war coming and it won’t be pretty.
I tutored teens in reading in a facility for boys who got in trouble. The one boy I tutored was in for selling drugs. I was told that his mother wanted him to sell durgs because it brought in more money than working at, say, McDonald's.
