Holy week at St. John Cantius

Here are a few images from St. John Cantius in Chicago, where they know how to put the 'holy' into Holy Week.

We don't live in Chicagoland anymore, but if you're blessed to be within striking distance on Sunday, consider feasting upon the following:

12:30 High Tridentine Mass:
Messe Solennelle De Sainte Cecile, Charles-François Gounod (1818-1893)
Terra Tremuit, Joseph Leopold Eybler (1765-1846)
Regina Caeli, K 276, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Arr. Rev. Scott A. Haynes, S.J.C. (b. 1971)
Hallelujah Chorus (from ‘Messiah’), George Frederick Handel (1685-1759)

10:30 High Novus Ordo Mass in Latin:
Messe de Pasques, Marc Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704)
Angelus Autem Domini, Felice Anerio (1560-1614)
Pascha Nostrum, Ludwig Senfl (1486-1543)

Wishing you a blessed Good Friday.

  1. Hi Jill,

That's my parish. It is indeed a beautiful, old church with gorgeous statues, windows, high altar.....wonderful choirs, and most wonderfully, holy Priests. I'm thankful we have the Canons of St. John Cantius and the ability to attend the Traditional Mass in such beautiful surroundings.

I only wish (there's always a "but", isn't there?) they'd do the traditional Tenebrae and Good Friday service ~ they don't. It's all Novus Ordo stuff, though done in Latin and beautiful nonetheless. You certainly can't beat their St. Cecilia Choir. Gorgeous. Just a sticking point for me.

I try to get to the nearby SSPX chapel in Oak Park for the Traditional Holy Week when I can. But I do still appreciate and love St. John Cantius Church.

  2. Easter Vigil is NO, too, at least it was when we lived out there. We used to go to Rockford for that.

What I miss most of all is the 12:30 Easter Sunday Mass. We hardly ever have an orchestra (with timpani!) at Mass out here. :)

  3. Yes, the Easter Vigil is NO still, as far as I know. I don't attend. The Church either has a larger group of parishioners that are NO or the pastor has his personal preferences to give more time and seemingly importance to reverent and 'latin-ized' Novus Ordo Masses. I go to the 7:30am Mass and love it. A wee bit early but the 12:30 is just too late in the day already.

I've never been up to Rockford for Mass; too far. I went on a FSSP pilgrimage a few years back to Italy and had the honor of dining with the Superior, who said they're not likely to start an apostolate any time soon in Chicago (or suburbs) since Chicagoans already have a couple of Churches that offer the Traditional Mass. Boo Hoo.
