Our Philtra, Ourselves

Alternate title: It's the philtrum, stupid.

Wesley Smith observes: "Meaningless Lump of Flesh Develops Face." And not just a face, but a unique, human face:

For you youngsters, my headline refers to this iconic 70's women's lib tome:

It is undeniable that the growing fetus is his or her own self, too. I guess that's the crux of the problem for abortion fans: they know that that blob is really a person who will require inconvenient nurturing and self-sacrifice for a couple of decades, or at least for the nine months till birth. (There is no shortage of couples who are aching to adopt newborn babies.) But ultimately, in our liberated culture, the developing child's personhood doesn't matter at all, seeing that he is much, much smaller than those who reserve the option to destroy him.

  1. Abortionistas claim that the human life of "the fetus" is a religious claim. But it's straight biology. Consider three questions about a zygote:
    1) Is it living or non-living matter? Well, it metabolizes, maintains homeostasis, grows, adapts, and so on. Out of 100 biologists, 0 would say it is not living.
    2) Is it human or some other species? To ask the question is to answer it.
    3) Is it part of the mother, or is it some other individual? They have different genes, to begin with--come to think of it, that's ample. It's another individual, a member of the species homo sapiens.

The more sophisticated abortionistas concede it's a human life, but dispute it's a person. But it is then they, not we, who are dragging metaphysics into this.

I may add that the concept of human beings who are not persons has a bad history (we Jews had a very bad experience with it in Europe just before 1945). And it had no purchase whatever in American law or custom before Roe v. Wade made it up out of whole cloth.

  2. and speaking of metaphysics, free will is metaphysical. That free will that the "right to choose" employs is metaphysical. Sovereign personhood is metaphysical. Abortion denies to the individual person a human soul, endowed with unalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness are metaphysical. Government does not give life and therefore, government cannot take innocent human life.
