PRENDA debate provokes usual response from Dems; Vote will take place today; Updates: President opposes ban, LiveAction releases another video; PRENDA defeated

How much do certain House Democrats love abortion? So much that they can't even find a way to take stand against "terminations" (PP's preferred word) based on the sex of the baby. Just press the button labeled "abortion restriction" and out come the same old slogans. Steve Ertelt reports on yesterday's PRENDA debate:

Democrats in Congress peddled a curious reason for opposing a ban on sex-selection abortions that target girl babies with abortion because they are not boy parents may prefer. They said the ban was anti-woman and part of the so-called “War on Women” Republicans are allegedly waging.

During today’s debate on the Congressional bill to ban sex-selection abortions, Michigan Democrat John Conyers said the ban on sex-selection abortions “tramples the rights of women.”

“It limits a woman’s right to choose and jeopardizes her access to safe, legal medical care,” he claimed.

Conyers, ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee, went as far as fighting GOP attempts to name the bill after Susan B. Anthony to honor women.

Jarrold Nadler, of New York, said the ban on sex-selection abortions is the “latest tactic in the War on Women.” Rep. Hank Johnson said the bill was part of the “Republican War on Women.” And Barbara Lee of California went as far as claiming that women would reset to back alley abortions if they couldn’t obtain a sex-selection abortion like the ones the bill would ban.
Yes, without the sacred right to tear our little ones apart piece by piece because the "boy" or "girl" slot in our dream family happens to be filled, women's lives will be once again threatened by predatory butchers wielding rusty, contaminated implements in filthy abortuaries. Oh, wait.

Don't the likes of Conyers, Nadler, and Lee ever get tired of hearing themselves repeat this stuff over and over? I know they don't care about the truth, but you'd think the sheer tedium of it all would get to them after a while. Then again, they do love the sound of their own voices.

And they're made of sterner stuff than I. How anyone can sit through this testimony and not be moved to compassion for that tiny, innocent victim is beyond me.

More on PRENDA from Ertelt, who quotes (respectively) AUL's Charmaine Yoest and Rep. Chris Smith:
“There is nothing pro-woman about killing a baby girl because she is female, and putting her mother’s health and safety at risk in the process,” she said. “Americans—whether pro-life or pro-abortion—overwhelmingly oppose this barbaric practice that undermines the dignity of the human person and agree that sex-selection abortion should be illegal.  AULA calls on all Members of the House to vote for PRENDA to stop the war on women yet to be born.”

Congressman Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican, drove the point home about how and why the bill is pro-woman.

“For most of us, Mr. Speaker, “it’s a girl” is cause for enormous joy, happiness and celebration.  But in many countries—including our own—it can be a death sentence.   Today, the three most dangerous words in China and India are: it’s a girl.  We can’t let that happen here,” he explained. “By now most people know that the killing of baby girls by abortion or at birth is pervasive in China due to the One Child policy and a preference for sons.  China and India are “missing” tens of millions of daughters.”

Guess what: Obama opposes a ban on sex-selective abortion. They don't call him the Abortion President for nothing.

Spiritual bankruptcy in the age of abortion

This is another undercover LiveAction video. So, thank God, the client isn't really planning to abort a female child because she already has one. But this reveals so much, not only about Planned Parenthood, which refuses to discontinue gender-based abortions, but about the mentality of entitlement, of getting what you want regardless of the collateral damage, and of the spiritual atrophy of our abortion culture. How casually the PP worker speaks of her own abortions. Human life, including one's own flesh and blood, is entirely subject to one's whims, and having no intrinsic or even sentimental value, is as disposable as any other unwanted consumer item. I've got junk in my basement I'd have a harder time getting rid of than this mom appears to have had in choosing to abort her children. Here's hoping appearances are deceptive and she's not quite as cold as she seems.

"I've had two abortions and I have four kids. Ha ha." "So just continue and try again. Ha ha."

Hey, you've got to break -- and scramble! ha ha! -- some eggs to make an omelet. Keep trying till you get it right!

When the day comes to explain to the four survivors why their two siblings weren't worthy of birth and life and a place in their family, what will their parents say?

A reality check from Thomas Sowell

You've heard the voices urging young people to "find their passion" and shape a career out of "doing what they love." Good advice, up to a point. Thomas Sowell offers a reality check:

But if that is the only kind of work that people should have to do, how is garbage to be collected, or how are bedpans to be emptied in hospitals, or jobs with life-threatening dangers to be performed?

Does anyone imagine that firemen enjoy going into burning homes and buildings to rescue people trapped by the flames? That soldiers going into combat think it is fun?

In the real world, many things are done simply because they have to be done, not because doing them brings immediate pleasure to those who do them. Some people take justifiable pride in working to take care of their families, whether or not the work itself is great.
Sowell is worried that our entitlement culture nudges the young to choose idleness over menial work, that essential bottom rung on the ladder to better jobs. Read the rest.

I would add that there's dignity in a job well done, however menial, and real satisfaction to be earned from, as Sowell puts it, doing what needs to be done, and earning your pay.

Over to Mike Rowe, in a post from 2009, in which he declares "follow your passion" to be "probably the worst advice I ever got." If you haven't seen the video embedded there, it's worth watching. He starts off with an anecdote about castrating lambs, but you can skip that. In the second half he talks about what he's learned about work through Dirty Jobs, arguing, among other things, that "people with dirty jobs are the happiest people I know" and this, with which Sowell might agree: "We've declared war on work, as a society."

The dark world of dressage and what's the matter with Camp David

I've been away from the news this weekend and maybe you have, too. So in case you missed it, the New York Times did an in-depth exposé on the Romneys' scandalous interest in . . . horses. (No, they don't eat them, or even strap them to the roof of the car. They just ride them.) Mona Charen:

[Mrs. Romney] took it up as therapy for multiple sclerosis, the paper acknowledges. But readers will want a glimpse into the “Romneys’ way of life, which they have generally shielded from view.”

The Times’s crack investigative team has unearthed some really critical information here: 1) it’s expensive to buy horses, 2) when buying and selling horses, the parties sometimes squabble about foot injuries, horse tranquilizers, and other fascinating equine stuff, 3) the Romneys are supporting a trainer/Olympic hopeful who does dressage, 4) said trainer was once sued and, oh boy, prepare yourselves, hired a veterinarian who supported Romney for president in 2008.

Well, I guess after this we can just call off the election in November.
Ron Radosh has more on the Times' sad little attempt to incite envy among the masses:
This is the kind of investigative news story the editors of the New York Times consider important. You won’t find a front-page investigation of the Obama administration’s crony capitalism and its using federal dollars to fund failing green-energy firms like Solyndra, or an investigative report about Eric Holder’s DOJ and its failure to investigate the DEA’s selling of arms to the drug syndicates, or scores of other questions one may have about the incumbent president’s policies and their deleterious effects.

Nor will you find any stories providing us the details of Michelle Obama’s notorious vacation in Spain at the taxpayers’ expense. And there are no stories about Obama’s expensive vacations in mansions in Hawaii or Martha’s Vineyard, where he is at home with all the other elitists of Democratic Party persuasion, such as the singer Carly Simon and others in the entertainment industry that lavish his campaign with big money. Nor does the paper remind readers that our president went to the most elite and wealthiest private high school in Hawaii . . . .

A friend of mine noted that FDR, a wealthy man himself, dubbed the presidential retreat available to the commander-in-chief “Shangri-la,” which it was called until Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name to what it is today, Camp David. Don’t expect Barack Obama to take his vacation there. It just can’t compare to the elite homes he can inhabit in the Vineyard. And speaking of Franklin D. Roosevelt, he was one of the wealthiest leaders to inhabit the White House. Millions loved him nevertheless, and did not begrudge him his wealth because they saw him enacting policies they believed helped them and the country. FDR was supported by the political left wing, and not one of his leftist supporters would ever have dared to attack him for his wealth, just as long as he gave speeches pledging to “throw the money-changers out of the temple,” even though — as one historian quipped — he brought them back in a few days later.

Ann Romney pursues her costly (and rather classy) hobby at her own expense. The NY Times wants us to resent it. Then there's Michelle . . .

Get it while you can, I guess.

And speaking of Camp David, here's another plausible theory on why Obama hates it:
HELENE COOPER, NEW YORK TIMES WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Alright, for something totally superficial, I have figured out why President Obama does not like Camp David.

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: He doesn’t like it?

COOPER: He hates it. We were up there for the G-8 last weekend and I’ve never been able to understand why, you know, Obama, President Obama doesn't like going there. It's beautiful. I mean, the cabins are…

MATTHEWS: Did you get to see it?

COOPER: Yes, I finally got to see it. I got to see the presidential cabin.

MATTHEWS: Everybody loved it.

COOPER: It was fantastic. And so everybody’s going, “Why doesn't he spend more time up there?” No golf.

MATTHEWS: No golf.

COOPER: It's all about the golf.

MATTHEWS: Doesn’t he have a little putting green?

COOPER: No, it's all about the golf. It's got a couple of places where you can...

MATTHEWS: But it's got skeet shooting, it’s got bowling, it’s got everything.

COOPER: There's wildlife, I saw a squirrel.

MATTHEWS: Oh God. I think that shows a limitation at this point. I think it would be great out there.
A limitation on His Majesty's amusement?!

Memorial Day

Scroll down for links to tributes. Here's my traditional post:

Parents, grab your kids and browse through the 3400 Medal of Honor citations (a few below) or get a book from the library and sit down with it together. Our children  need to know about the heroes who died to make our way of life possible.

From one of the citations below:

When an exploding enemy mortar round severed 2d Lt. Bobo's right leg below the knee, he refused to be evacuated and insisted upon being placed in a firing position to cover the movement of the command group to a better location. With a web belt around his leg serving as a tourniquet and with his leg jammed into the dirt to curtain [sic] the bleeding, he remained in this position and delivered devastating fire into the ranks of the enemy attempting to overrun the marines.
Corporal Stowers, distinguished himself by exceptional heroism on 28 September 1918 while serving as a squad leader in Company C, 371st Infantry Regiment, 93d Division. His company was the lead company during the attack on Hill 188, Champagne Marne Sector, France, during World War I. A few minutes after the attack began, the enemy ceased firing and began climbing up onto the parapets of the trenches, holding up their arms as if wishing to surrender. The enemy's actions caused the American forces to cease fire and to come out into the open. As the company started forward and when within about 100 meters of the trench line, the enemy jumped back into their trenches and greeted Corporal Stowers' company with interlocking bands of machine gun fire and mortar fire causing well over fifty percent casualties. Faced with incredible enemy resistance, Corporal Stowers took charge, setting such a courageous example of personal bravery and leadership that he inspired his men to follow him in the attack. With extraordinary heroism and complete disregard of personal danger under devastating fire, he crawled forward leading his squad toward an enemy machine gun nest, which was causing heavy casualties to his company. After fierce fighting, the machine gun position was destroyed and the enemy soldiers were killed. Displaying great courage and intrepidity Corporal Stowers continued to press the attack against a determined enemy. While crawling forward and urging his men to continue the attack on a second trench line, he was gravely wounded by machine gun fire. Although Corporal Stowers was mortally wounded, he pressed forward, urging on the members of his squad, until he died. Inspired by the heroism and display of bravery of Corporal Stowers, his company continued the attack against incredible odds, contributing to the capture of Hill 188 and causing heavy enemy casualties. Corporal Stowers' conspicuous gallantry, extraordinary heroism, and supreme devotion to his men were well above and beyond the call of duty, follow the finest traditions of military service, and reflect the utmost credit on him and the United States Army.
Rank and organization: Signalman First Class, U.S. Coast Guard Born: 11 October 1919, Vancouver, British Columbia. Accredited to Washington. Citation: For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry m action above and beyond the call of duty as Petty Officer in Charge of a group of 24 Higgins boats, engaged in the evacuation of a battalion of marines trapped by enemy Japanese forces at Point Cruz Guadalcanal, on 27 September 1942. After making preliminary plans for the evacuation of nearly 500 beleaguered marines, Munro, under constant strafing by enemy machineguns on the island, and at great risk of his life, daringly led 5 of his small craft toward the shore. As he closed the beach, he signaled the others to land, and then in order to draw the enemy's fire and protect the heavily loaded boats, he valiantly placed his craft with its 2 small guns as a shield between the beachhead and the Japanese. When the perilous task of evacuation was nearly completed, Munro was instantly killed by enemy fire, but his crew, 2 of whom were wounded, carried on until the last boat had loaded and cleared the beach. By his outstanding leadership, expert planning, and dauntless devotion to duty, he and his courageous comrades undoubtedly saved the lives of many who otherwise would have perished. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Army, Company I, 15th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Lohe, Germany, 18 April 1945. Entered service at: Staten Island, N.Y. Birth: Staten Island, N.Y. G.O. No.: 21, 26 February 1946. Citation: He made a gallant, 1-man attack against vastly superior enemy forces near Lohe, Germany. His unit, attempting a quick conquest of hostile hill positions that would open the route to Nuremberg before the enemy could organize his defense of that city, was pinned down by brutal fire from rifles, machine pistols, and 2 heavy machineguns. Entirely on his own initiative, Pvt. Merrell began a single-handed assault. He ran 100 yards through concentrated fire, barely escaping death at each stride, and at pointblank range engaged 4 German machine pistolmen with his rifle, killing all of them while their bullets ripped his uniform. As he started forward again, his rifle was smashed by a sniper's bullet, leaving him armed only with 3 grenades. But he did not hesitate. He zigzagged 200 yards through a hail of bullets to within 10 yards of the first machinegun, where he hurled 2 grenades and then rushed the position ready to fight with his bare hands if necessary. In the emplacement he seized a Luger pistol and killed what Germans had survived the grenade blast. Rearmed, he crawled toward the second machinegun located 30 yards away, killing 4 Germans in camouflaged foxholes on the way, but himself receiving a critical wound in the abdomen. And yet he went on, staggering, bleeding, disregarding bullets which tore through the folds of his clothing and glanced off his helmet. He threw his last grenade into the machinegun nest and stumbled on to wipe out the crew. He had completed this self-appointed task when a machine pistol burst killed him instantly. In his spectacular 1-man attack Pvt. Merrell killed 6 Germans in the first machinegun emplacement, 7 in the next, and an additional 10 infantrymen who were astride his path to the weapons which would have decimated his unit had he not assumed the burden of the assault and stormed the enemy positions with utter fearlessness, intrepidity of the highest order, and a willingness to sacrifice his own life so that his comrades could go on to victory.
Rank and organization: Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army, X Corps Artillery, while attached to the 52d Transportation Truck Battalion. Place and date: Near Chosin Reservoir, Korea, 29 November to 10 December 1950. Entered service at: St. Paul, Minn. Born: 8 February 1904, Malahi Island, Luzon, Philippine Islands. G.O. No.: 21, 25 April 1957. Citation: Lt. Col. Page, a member of X Corps Artillery, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action above and beyond the call of duty in a series of exploits. On 29 November, Lt. Col. Page left X Corps Headquarters at Hamhung with the mission of establishing traffic control on the main supply route to 1st Marine Division positions and those of some Army elements on the Chosin Reservoir plateau. Having completed his mission Lt. Col. Page was free to return to the safety of Hamhung but chose to remain on the plateau to aid an isolated signal station, thus being cut off with elements of the marine division. After rescuing his jeep driver by breaking up an ambush near a destroyed bridge Lt. Col. Page reached the lines of a surrounded marine garrison at Koto-ri. He then voluntarily developed and trained a reserve force of assorted army troops trapped with the marines. By exemplary leadership and tireless devotion he made an effective tactical unit available. In order that casualties might be evacuated, an airstrip was improvised on frozen ground partly outside of the Koto-ri defense perimeter which was continually under enemy attack. During 2 such attacks, Lt. Col. Page exposed himself on the airstrip to direct fire on the enemy, and twice mounted the rear deck of a tank, manning the machine gun on the turret to drive the enemy back into a no man's land. On 3 December while being flown low over enemy lines in a light observation plane, Lt. Col. Page dropped handgrenades on Chinese positions and sprayed foxholes with automatic fire from his carbine. After 10 days of constant fighting the marine and army units in the vicinity of the Chosin Reservoir had succeeded in gathering at the edge of the plateau and Lt. Col. Page was flown to Hamhung to arrange for artillery support of the beleaguered troops attempting to break out. Again Lt. Col. Page refused an opportunity to remain in safety and returned to give every assistance to his comrades. As the column slowly moved south Lt. Col. Page joined the rear guard. When it neared the entrance to a narrow pass it came under frequent attacks on both flanks. Mounting an abandoned tank Lt. Col. Page manned the machine gun, braved heavy return fire, and covered the passing vehicles until the danger diminished. Later when another attack threatened his section of the convoy, then in the middle of the pass, Lt. Col. Page took a machine gun to the hillside and delivered effective counterfire, remaining exposed while men and vehicles passed through the ambuscade. On the night of 10 December the convoy reached the bottom of the pass but was halted by a strong enemy force at the front and on both flanks. Deadly small-arms fire poured into the column. Realizing the danger to the column as it lay motionless, Lt. Col. Page fought his way to the head of the column and plunged forward into the heart of the hostile position. His intrepid action so surprised the enemy that their ranks became disordered and suffered heavy casualties. Heedless of his safety, as he had been throughout the preceding 10 days, Lt. Col. Page remained forward, fiercely engaging the enemy single-handed until mortally wounded. By his valiant and aggressive spirit Lt. Col. Page enabled friendly forces to stand off the enemy. His outstanding courage, unswerving devotion to duty, and supreme self-sacrifice reflect great credit upon Lt. Col. Page and are in the highest tradition of the military service.
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, March 3, 1863, has awarded in the name of The Congress the Medal of Honor to
AIRMAN FIRST CLASS WILLIAM H. PITSENBARGER
UNITED STATES AIR FORCE
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Airman First Class Pitsenbarger distinguished himself by extreme valor on 11 April 1966 near Cam My, Republic of Vietnam, while assigned as a Pararescue Crew Member, Detachment 6, 38th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron. On that date, Airman Pitsenbarger was aboard a rescue helicopter responding to a call for evacuation of casualties incurred in an ongoing firefight between elements of the United States Army's 1st Infantry Division and a sizeable enemy force approximately 35 miles east of Saigon. With complete disregard for personal safety, Airman Pitsenbarger volunteered to ride a hoist more than one hundred feet through the jungle, to the ground. On the ground, he organized and coordinated rescue efforts, cared for the wounded, prepared casualties for evacuation, and insured that the recovery operation continued in a smooth and orderly fashion. Through his personal efforts, the evacuation of the wounded was greatly expedited. As each of the nine casualties evacuated that day was recovered, Airman Pitsenbarger refused evacuation in order to get more wounded soldiers to safety. After several pick-ups, one of the two rescue helicopters involved in the evacuation was struck by heavy enemy ground fire and was forced to leave the scene for an emergency landing. Airman Pitsenbarger stayed behind on the ground to perform medical duties. Shortly thereafter, the area came under sniper and mortar fire. During a subsequent attempt to evacuate the site, American forces came under heavy assault by a large Viet Cong force. When the enemy launched the assault, the evacuation was called off and Airman Pitsenbarger took up arms with the besieged infantrymen. He courageously resisted the enemy, braving intense gunfire to gather and distribute vital ammunition to American defenders. As the battle raged on, he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to care for the wounded, pull them out of the line of fire, and return fire whenever he could, during which time he was wounded three times. Despite his wounds, he valiantly fought on, simultaneously treating as many wounded as possible. In the vicious fighting that followed, the American forces suffered 80 percent casualties as their perimeter was breached, and Airman Pitsenbarger was fatally wounded. Airman Pitsenbarger exposed himself to almost certain death by staying on the ground, and perished while saving the lives of wounded infantrymen. His bravery and determination exemplify the highest professional standards and traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Air Force.
*BOBO, JOHN P. (Vietnam)
Rank and organization: Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, 3d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d Marine Division (Rein), FMF. Place and date: Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam, 30 March 1967. Entered service at: Buffalo, N.Y. Born: 14 February 1943, Niagara Falls, N.Y. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Company 1 was establishing night ambush sites when the command group was attacked by a reinforced North Vietnamese company supported by heavy automatic weapons and mortar fire. 2d Lt. Bobo immediately organized a hasty defense and moved from position to position encouraging the outnumbered marines despite the murderous enemy fire. Recovering a rocket launcher from among the friendly casualties, he organized a new launcher team and directed its fire into the enemy machine gun positions. 2d Lt. Bobo was mortally wounded while firing his weapon into the main point of the enemy attack but his valiant spirit inspired his men to heroic efforts, and his tenacious stand enabled the command group to gain a protective position where it repulsed the enemy onslaught. 2d Lt. Bobo's superb leadership, dauntless courage, and bold initiative reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, Company F, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. place and date: Binh Son, Republic of Vietnam, 21 April 1967. Entered service at: portland, Oreg. Born: 21 September 1948, Lexington, Va. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. On 21 April 1967, during Operation UNION* elements of Company F, conducting offensive operations at Binh Son, encountered a firmly entrenched enemy force and immediately deployed to engage them. The marines in Pfc. Martini's platoon assaulted across an open rice paddy to within 20 meters of the enemy trench line where they were suddenly struck by hand grenades, intense small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire. The enemy onslaught killed 14 and wounded 18 marines, pinning the remainder of the platoon down behind a low paddy dike. In the face of imminent danger, Pfc. Martini immediately crawled over the dike to a forward open area within 15 meters of the enemy position where, continuously exposed to the hostile fire, he hurled hand grenades, killing several of the enemy. Crawling back through the intense fire, he rejoined his platoon which had moved to the relative safety of a trench line. From this position he observed several of his wounded comrades Lying helpless in the fire-swept paddy. Although he knew that 1 man had been killed attempting to assist the wounded, Pfc. Martini raced through the open area and dragged a comrade back to a friendly position. In spite of a serious wound received during this first daring rescue, he again braved the unrelenting fury of the enemy fire to aid another companion Lying wounded only 20 meters in front of the enemy trench line. As he reached the fallen marine, he received a mortal wound, but disregarding his own condition, he began to drag the marine toward his platoon's position. Observing men from his unit attempting to leave the security of their position to aid him, concerned only for their safety, he called to them to remain under cover, and through a final supreme effort, moved his injured comrade to where he could be pulled to safety, before he fell, succumbing to his wounds. Stouthearted and indomitable, Pfc. Martini unhesitatingly yielded his life to save 2 of his comrades and insure the safety of the remainder of his platoon. His outstanding courage, valiant fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty reflected the highest credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
*MURPHY, MICHAEL P. (Afghanistan)
Rank and Organization: Lieutenant, United States Navy
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as the leader of a special reconnaissance element with Naval Special Warfare Task Unit Afghanistan on 27 and 28 June 2005. While leading a mission to locate a high-level anti-coalition militia leader, Lieutenant Murphy demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the face of grave danger in the vicinity of Asadabad, Konar Province, Afghanistan. On 28 June 2005, operating in an extremely rugged enemy-controlled area, Lieutenant Murphy's team was discovered by anti-coalition militia sympathizers, who revealed their position to Taliban fighters. As a result, between 30 and 40 enemy fighters besieged his four-member team. Demonstrating exceptional resolve, Lieutenant Murphy valiantly led his men in engaging the large enemy force. The ensuing fierce firefight resulted in numerous enemy casualties, as well as the wounding of all four members of the team. Ignoring his own wounds and demonstrating exceptional composure, Lieutenant Murphy continued to lead and encourage his men. When the primary communicator fell mortally wounded, Lieutenant Murphy repeatedly attempted to call for assistance for his beleaguered teammates. Realizing the impossibility of communicating in the extreme terrain, and in the face of almost certain death, he fought his way into open terrain to gain a better position to transmit a call. This deliberate, heroic act deprived him of cover, exposing him to direct enemy fire. Finally achieving contact with his Headquarters, Lieutenant Murphy maintained his exposed position while he provided his location and requested immediate support for his team. In his final act of bravery, he continued to engage the enemy until he was mortally wounded, gallantly giving his life for his country and for the cause of freedom. By his selfless leadership, courageous actions, and extraordinary devotion to duty, Lieutenant Murphy reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
Rank and Organization: Master-At-Arms Second Class (Sea, Air And Land), United States Navy
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as automatic weapons gunner for Naval Special Warfare Task Group Arabian Peninsula, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM on 29 September 2006. As a member of a combined SEAL and Iraqi Army Sniper Overwatch Element, tasked with providing early warning and stand-off protection from a rooftop in an insurgent held sector of Ar Ramadi, Iraq, Petty Officer Monsoor distinguished himself by his exceptional bravery in the face of grave danger. In the early morning, insurgents prepared to execute a coordinated attack by reconnoitering the area around the element's position. Element snipers thwarted the enemy's initial attempt by eliminating two insurgents. The enemy continued to assault the element, engaging them with a rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire. As enemy activity increased, Petty Officer Monsoor took position with his machine gun between two teammates on an outcropping of the roof. While the SEALs vigilantly watched for enemy activity, an insurgent threw a hand grenade from an unseen location, which bounced off Petty Officer Monsoor's chest and landed in front of him. Although only he could have escaped the blast, Petty Officer Monsoor chose instead to protect his teammates. Instantly and without regard for his own safety, he threw himself onto the grenade to absorb the force of the explosion with his body, saving the lives of his two teammates. By his undaunted courage, fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of certain death, Petty Officer Monsoor gallantly gave his life for his country, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Media watchdogs curiously incurious about Wright hush money claim

Okay, it's not actually curious. But it ought to be.

It's been almost two weeks since the revelation of Jeremiah Wright's claim that he was offered $150k by Barack Obama's best friend to keep his very large mouth shut until after the election. Wright also claimed (on tape) that the offer was followed up by a personal visit from the candidate:

“And one of the first things Barack said was, ‘I really wish you wouldn’t do any more public speaking until after the November election.’ He knew I had some speaking engagements lined up, and he said, ‘I wish you wouldn’t speak. It’s gonna hurt the campaign if you do that.’

“And what did you say?” I asked. “I said, ‘I don’t see it that way. And anyway, how am I supposed to support my family?’ And he said, ‘Well, I wish you wouldn’t speak in public. The press is gonna eat you alive.’

“Barack said, ‘I’m sorry you don’t see it the way I do. Do you know what your problem is?’ And I said, ‘No, what’s my problem?’ And he said, ‘You have to tell the truth.’ I said, ‘That’s a good problem to have. That’s a good problem for all preachers to have. That’s why I could never be a politician.’
You'll be shocked to learn that the liberal media doesn't see this as a newsworthy story:
NBC, ABC and CBS have all ignored a new book by former Newsweek foreign editor Ed Klein that contains a shocking allegation from Klein's interview with Rev. Jeremiah Wright in which the former Obama pastor claimed that an Obama supporter offered him if he would refrain from preaching until after the 2008 election.
The book, The Amateur, is Amazon's number one and two political bestseller. But as is so often the case with the liberal media when a story doesn't fit their agenda, they've decided that there's nothing for their audience to see here.

It's a bore to keep pointing it out, but imagine if it were Bush or Romney who was implicated in an offer to shut someone up. The media frenzy would be fierce and unrelenting. Certainly, they'd be working overtime to try to verify the story. They'd at least attempt to question the principals. As it is, our fearless watchdogs aren't even curious enough to speculate on where that money was going to come from. Aren't they disgusting?

Steyn on presidents gone bad

Mark conversed with Hugh Hewitt yesterday on an assortment of frauds and scoundrels who are, were, or (shudder) might have been, presidents of the United States:

Bill Clinton:

HH: . . . I showed them the picture out from TMZ earlier today of Bill Clinton in Monaco surrounded by porn stars, including Tasha Reign and Brooklyn Lee. I can’t tell you most of the movies they’ve been because of the titles, but Tasha was in Farm Girls Gone Bad, which I think is very appropriate.

MS: Right, you know, what I find odd about this is that the year of Monica, which was what, 1998, 1999 now? I wrote in the Telegraph in London, I thought let’s, I said pitch it on ten years down the road. Bill Clinton’s in retirement, or he’s had a midlife career change, and he’s running a porno house in Amsterdam showing, I don’t know whether it was Farm Girls Gone Bad or whatever. But what astonishes me, and which often happens, by the way with the left, is that you make a casual joke about them like that, and ten years later, it comes true.

HH: (laughing) Yeah.

MS: (laughing) Bill Clinton is living my throwaway gag from 1998.

John Edwards:
Yeah, and I think this is what’s actually disgraceful about this story, is that John Edwards should not have been presented to America as a credible presidential candidate in 2008. The people who did that are all the respectable mainstream journalists. If it hadn’t been for, you know, the National Enquirer, who like to do the things that old fashioned journalists used to do, this absolutely repellent creature was actually, if you look at his results in Iowa, you know, a misstep by Obama and Hillary here and there, and he could very well have wound up as president. Where I part company with what’s going on now is that I don’t think there’s a crime here. Bunny Mellon and a couple of other fellows essentially gave money to John Edwards in the full knowledge that he was going to use it to take care of this particular problem of his. I don’t see that that, a guy should be looking at 30 years in jail for that. And I think John Edwards is the lowest of the low, but I’m very concerned at what is happening at the federal level to American justice.
Read Mark's column on the trial here, in case you missed it. The jury is still out.

Obama at the G-8:
…for a start, Obama is in no position to lecture even the Europeans, because on a lot of the numbers, the United States can reasonably be said to be actually in a worse situation than Greece, France, Spain, Portugal, whoever you want to talk about. So the idea that Angela Merkel, never mind Stephen Harper in Canada, has anything to learn from Obama, I think is ridiculous. And they should have laughed at him, by the way. You know, Stephen Harper should have brought along a piece of the Keystone Pipeline, held it up to his eye, and watched, and bellowed, he should have yelled at Obama through a piece of the Keystone Pipeline all summit long, I think.
Someone might as well have fun with it, because a piece of a pipeline isn't much good for anything else.

But that's all just build up to the most tantalizing item from the conversation:
HH: . . . Mark, you’ve been in an undisclosed location. I can only assume you’ve been recording the fall’s release of the latest in the Jessica Martin-Mark Steyn series of Christmas albums.

MS: You, oh, you’re getting worse. You usually don’t start hectoring me about the clues as to the Christmas release until, like, August or early September. It’s still May.
I have a confession to make. About a month ago a young friend of ours appeared in his high school's production of Anything Goes. It was vastly entertaining in places, and in the afterglow I felt compelled to crack out my recording of The Mark Steyn Christmas Show and listen to Mark and Jessica's extended version of It's De-Lovely. It's delightful! Since then, I've been listening to it more than I care to admit. It kinda grows on you, like a Christmas Glow Worm.

PS: I also recently revisited Mark's wonderful audio tribute to Johnny Mercer. Which reminds me: the beginning of the Sinatra centennial is a mere two and a half years away. Just sayin'.

Patterico's chilling account of harassment

If you've ever wondered why I sacrifice credibility and validity by blogging under a silly pseudonym, well, it's not only because I'd rather not embarrass my children with my [ahem] profound political and cultural observations.

I don't normally blog about what other bloggers are doing. But this isn't about an internal "blog-war" or some inside-baseball thing among bloggers. It's about criminal attempts to intimidate and harass others into silence. It's long and complex, but you don't have to immerse yourself in every detail. Below are a couple of excerpts to give you an idea of what Aaron Walker, Stacy McCain, and others are up against. Michelle Malkin said blogger Patterico's tale of harassment by Brett Kimberlin and associates would send chills up your spine and she wasn't wrong. A bit of his horror story:

THE NIGHT I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED BECAUSE OF MY BLOGGING

At 12:35 a.m. on July 1, 2011, sheriff’s deputies pounded on my front door and rang my doorbell. They shouted for me to open the door and come out with my hands up.

When I opened the door, deputies pointed guns at me and ordered me to put my hands in the air. I had a cell phone in my hand. Fortunately, they did not mistake it for a gun.

They ordered me to turn around and put my hands behind my back. They handcuffed me. They shouted questions at me: IS THERE ANYONE ELSE IN THE HOUSE? and WHERE ARE THEY? and ARE THEY ALIVE?

I told them: Yes, my wife and my children are in the house. They’re upstairs in their bedrooms, sleeping. Of course they’re alive.

Deputies led me down the street to a patrol car parked about 2-3 houses away. At least one neighbor was watching out of her window as I was placed, handcuffed, in the back of the patrol car. I saw numerous patrol cars on my quiet street. There was a police helicopter flying overhead, shining a spotlight down on us as I walked towards the patrol car. Several neighbors later told us the helicopter woke them up. I saw a fire engine and an ambulance. A neighbor later told me they had a HazMat vehicle out on the street as well.

Meanwhile, police rushed into my home. They woke up my wife, led her downstairs and to the front porch, frisked her, and asked her where the children were. Then police ordered her to stand on the front porch with her hands against the wall while they entered my children’s bedrooms to make sure they were alive.

The call that sent deputies to my home was a hoax. Someone had pretended to be me. They called the police to say I had shot my wife. The sheriff’s deputies who arrived at my front door believed they were about to confront an armed man who had just shot his wife. I don’t blame the police for any of their actions. But I blame the person who made the call.

Because I could have been killed.

“SWATTING” CAN KILL PEOPLE

What you just heard and read is no joke. It actually happened. The phenomenon is called “SWATting,” because it can bring a SWAT team to your front door. SWATting is a particularly dangerous hoax in which a caller, generally a computer hacker, calls a police department to report a shooting at the home of his enemy. The caller will place this call to the police department’s business line, using Skype or a similar service, and hiding behind Internet proxies to make the call impossible to trace. Anxious police, believing they are responding to the home of an armed and dangerous man, show up at the front door pointing guns and screaming orders.

That is exactly what happened to me. It is a very dangerous hoax that could get the target killed. [. . .]

On many occasions, Ron Brynaert, Neal Rauhauser, Brett Kimberlin, and anonymous Kimberlin supporters have harassed me and other Kimberlin critics in a similar manner — using tactics that the FBI told me are characteristic of swatters:

Harassment of wives and family members – As noted above, Rauhauser asked readers for pictures of my wife. He and Brynaert have spoken of investigating my wife’s work as a Deputy District Attorney. Rauhauser and @OccupyRebellion have insinuated that my wife played a role in impersonating fake teens in the Anthony Weiner scandal. Kimberlin supporters @OccupyRebellion and @BreitbartUnmask have spoken of obtaining a picture of my wife. The Gaped Crusader constantly brought up my wife. [. . .]

The obsession with family members recently extended to Stacy McCain, with Kimberlin apparently having contacting Stacy’s wife’s employer, causing McCain to flee his house. Kimberlin supporter @BreitbartUnmask has mentioned the names of Stacy’s children online. @BreitbartUnmask has publicly outed a commenter of mine, discussed that commenter’s divorce records, and named his father.
These people are just plain evil.

From an undisclosed location, here's the latest update from RS McCain.

Nothing to see here: Networks ignore or downplay Catholic lawsuits against Obama administration

As a Catholic I was heartened by the news that 43 Catholic dioceses, schools, and hospitals have filed suit against the Obama administration to fight back against the HHS contraceptives, sterilization, and abortifacients mandate. One might expect a huge media splash to follow. But apparently this isn't the liberal media's kind of story. Nothing to see here:

CNN devoted over twice the air-time to a "stroller moms" protest against toxic chemicals than it did to the biggest religious lawsuit in U.S. history filed Monday.

A dozen lawsuits filed by 43 Catholic institutions against the Obama administration merited only news briefs on Monday with one full segment on Tuesday morning. The coverage totaled under seven minutes. In contrast, CNN gave almost 18 minutes to a march of about 100 people pushing for a Democratic-sponsored bill.

CNN's double-standard echoes the failure of the major networks to give the story its due coverage. ABC skipped covering the lawsuit entirely on Monday and Tuesday, while NBC gave it a scant 20-second glance on Tuesday morning. CBS did issue a full report on the lawsuits Tuesday morning, as well as a news brief on Monday evening.
The liberal media hope that by keeping these historic lawsuits quiet they'll avoid alienating voters who haven't already figured out that President Obama is the enemy of religious liberty and conscience rights. By failing to cover the story, they're clearly trying to help him get reelected. See a sampling of reactions to the non-coverage here.

    A "convoluted, ongoing nightmare"

If you read this blog you probably also read The Other McCain. But if you've missed the Brett Kimberlin saga, or were put off because of its sheer length and complexity, here's a chance to catch up:

Brett Kimberlin Saga Takes a Bizarre Turn, Forcing Me to Leave Maryland

    With wife and children.

Who is Brett Kimberlin? He's a convicted terrorist turned leftwing activist who goes after those who expose his criminal past. Background from Matthew Vadum:

Kimberlin, as blogger Liberty Chick previously reported,

spent nearly 17 years in prison after being convicted of launching a week-long bombing spree that terrorized the residents of Speedway, Indiana in the late 1970′s. One of the blasts horribly maimed a man so badly that it directly led to that man’s suicide a few years later, which was proven when the widow of that bombing victim successfully sued and won a civil judgment against Kimberlin for $1.6 million.

Kimberlin is the business partner of leftist blogger Brad Friedman who frequently plays fast and loose with the facts. They are both involved with a group called Velvet Revolution which also receives funding from the Tides Foundation.

JTMP has received at least $70,000 in grants from the far-left Tides Foundation since 2006.  The 2006 grant in the amount of $60,000 was for general operations which means JTMP could use the funds without restriction. The 2008 grant of $10,000 was also for general operations.

Another noteworthy donor is singer and liberal activist Barbra Streisand who has given JTMP at least $10,000 through her Barbra Streisand Foundation since 2006 ($5,000 in 2006 for general operations and $5,000 in 2008 for general operations).

Yet another is Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Sen. John Kerry (D-Massachusetts).  Mrs. Kerry is CEO of the Heinz Family Foundation which has given JTMP at least $20,000 since 2006 (the grant was earmarked for general operations).
Michelle Malkin, always a champion of bloggers, reports
Over the past year, Aaron Walker (who blogged as “Aaron Worthing”), Patterico, Liberty Chick, and now Stacy McCain have been targeted by convicted Speedway bomber Brett Kimberlin because they dared to mention his criminal past or assisted others who did. The late Andrew Breitbart warned about Kimberlin and company.

I have spoken directly with both Patterico and Aaron about their ongoing battles.

The mainstream press, not just the conservative blogosphere, needs to hear and report their stories.

This is a convoluted, ongoing nightmare that combines abuse of the court system, workplace intimidation, serial invasions of privacy, perjury, and harassment of family members. McCain was forced to move with his family out of his house this week, and has just gotten a small taste of what Aaron and Patterico have been enduring over the past year. Aaron and his wife were fired from their jobs after their employer feared the office would be targeted next. Convicted bomber Kimberlin has filed bogus “peace orders” against Aaron, when it is the Walkers who are the victims, not the perpetrators.

And Patterico’s plight will send chills up your spine when he is ready to tell it.
Convoluted and nightmarish it is. Hit Stacy McCain's tip jar if you'd like to support him and his family on their unexpected "vacation" from the security and comfort of home.

I guess little girls don't dream about being moms anymore?

Who's up for some tired lies about contraceptives and "women's health" from the Obama campaign?

"It is upsetting to me that in 2012 the use of birth control has become controversial.  Birth control isn't just for family planning. It's preventative care and treatment. It's medication that most women need and use at some point in their lives, and it is as common in a woman's medicine cabinet as cough medicine. Beyond that, it's a woman's right to make decisions about her own body and her own life."
    Dear "Erin,"
Relax. Your daughters' dreams of futures unencumbered by babies are perfectly safe, even if Obama loses to Romney. No one is even contemplating taking away your, or their, er, "preventative care." If your daughters ever find themselves punished with a baby it will be their own doing. Please see Katie Pavlich for the facts. (Katie points out in passing that one of the girls in the ad also appears in this equally deceptive Planned Parenthood/Obama ad.)

    Hat tip to Matthew Archbold.

    Don't let Romney be Romney

Philip Klein has a new e-book out entitled Conservative Survival in the Romney Era. I haven't read it yet, but this passage, excerpted by Michelle Malkin, hits home:

There’s always some argument partisans will make to discourage conservatives from criticizing Republicans. In the coming months, those of us who criticize Romney from the right will be told we should save it until after November, or else we’re just helping Obama. When we do so after the election – should he win – we’ll be told he deserves a honeymoon period and needs to rack up a few accomplishments first before moving to items on the conservative agenda. Eventually, it will be that we can’t weaken him before the midterm elections, and then later, that we have to loudly support him, or else he’ll lose reelection to an even worse liberal boogeyman (or boogeywoman) in 2016.
Right. There will always be an excuse to take the path of least resistance. Conservatives must exert unremitting rightward pressure on Romney. Mark Steyn has made that general point more than once, and opened his epilogue to After America, the "how-to" section, with this quote from Milton Friedman:
I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or it they try, they will shortly be out of office. [After America, p. 325]

    From the Amazon blurb:
Klein delves into what makes Romney tick and explores how conservatives can take advantage of his infamous calculating nature to ensure that he governs from the right if elected. The book takes lessons from the conservative failures of the Bush years and details how subsequent developments, from the Tea Party to Twitter, can make a difference this time around. Drawing on his experience as a leading conservative policy journalist, Klein also outlines a limited government agenda that conservatives should be striving for in a potential Romney administration. Whether the “Romney era” lasts for just a few months or a long eight years, conservatism will only survive if those who believe in a limited role for government stay true to their values.

    Various & sundry

    - Some good advice for Romney from Melissa O'Sullivan: Own it Like a (Rich) Man!

Rather than being painted as Richie Rich’s bully-boy nemesis — Reginald Van Dough Jr., Rich’s nasty cousin — Romney could easily be the hero. Call him Moneyed Mitt. And he can do it in three easy steps.

    1. Remember the story about Romney putting all the resources of his organization to work to rescue the abducted daughter of an employee? No? I told this story to an acquaintance last night, and he’d never heard it, either, but it moved him to think of Romney in a new light. Hello, Romney campaign? Please share this fantastic bit of Romney’s history, which shows how he used all the levers and privileges of his wealth for good.

    - Some good advice for conservatives from Philip Klein's new e-book:
If conservatives listen to calls for them to shut up and get in line, it’s more likely that Romney’s calculus will factor in their energetic support as a constant, thus making him comfortable enough to move back toward the left. But if conservatives continue to play coy with Romney and openly criticize him when he lets them down, it’s more likely his calculus will treat their support as a variable, giving him more reason to campaign and govern as a conservative.
    - A tale of two surrogates: Chris Christie for Romney:
“He is the most ill-prepared person to assume the presidency in my lifetime,” Christie told some 600 Kentucky Republicans at a Lexington hotel. “This is a guy who literally is walking around in a dark room trying to find the light switch of leadership.” [. . .]

“He has sat in the Oval Office and cared more about posing and preening and making partisan politics the rule of the day in Washington D.C. than he’s cared about progress,” the New Jersey Republican, now in his third year in office, said of Obama. [. . .]

“Now listen,” he said, “this country’s problems are too serious, too serious, to spend another day with a bystander in the oval office.”
    Cory Booker for . . . Obama?
I have to just say, from a very personal level, I’m not about to sit here and indict private equity. To me, it’s just we’re getting to a ridiculous point in America, especially that I know I live in a state where pension funds, unions and other people are investing in companies like Bain Capital. If you look at the totality of Bain Capital’s record, they’ve done a lot to support businesses, to grow businesses. And this to me, I’m very uncomfortable with. …

The last point I’ll make is this kind of stuff is nauseating to me on both sides. It’s nauseating to the American public. Enough is enough. Stop attacking private equity. Stop attacking Jeremiah Wright.
He was wrong about Wright but he was right about the rest. Predictably, he's since "walked it back." Discomfort can come from a variety of sources, it seems.

    - Sen. Mitch McConnell argues: "at some point here, this president needs to become the adult." Really? Why? He's been doing just fine, from his point of view, with the "posing and preening."

    - The president has some conveniently self-serving advice for Europe, via Roger Kimball:
Obama wants Europe to “ease up” on the austerity measures it’s imposed (sort of imposed) on Greece and other spendthrift countries. Don’t let them go into default now, when it could (indeed surely would) have serious consequences for the world economy, but wait until, say, the middle of November 2012 when Obama will be home free or (as I think) out on his ear.
    - I'm sure Chicagoans appreciated Obama's concern for what their city has gone through in anxiety, hype, and preparation for the NATO summit, with business closings, mass transit restrictions, and even advice to residents to leave town, just in case. No biggie for Obama, who seems as out of touch with his "hometown" as he is with the rest of America:
“I’ve been asking: Why is everybody making such a big fuss? This isn’t as big as Taste of Chicago,” the president quipped to a Sun-Times reporter.
The Taste was never like this:

But that's not Obama's problem. His exalted person gets dropped in and lifted out with no unpleasantness.

    - In case you missed it here's audio and text of one of our fine educators having an edifying class discussion on Romney vs Obama. You have to listen to a little of the audio to appreciate the teacher's hectoring, screeching tone.

    The self-made-up man

    Afterthought to yesterday's post:

Just after the Democratic convention in August 2008, Charles Krauthammer likened Obama to Gatsby:

Eerily missing at the Democratic convention this year were people of stature who were seriously involved at some point in Obama's life standing up to say: I know Barack Obama. I've been with Barack Obama. We've toiled/endured together. You can trust him. I do. [. . .]

So where are the colleagues? The buddies? The political or spiritual soul mates? His most important spiritual adviser and mentor was Jeremiah Wright. But he's out. Then there's William Ayers, with whom he served on a board. He's out. Where are the others?

The oddity of this convention is that its central figure is the ultimate self-made man, a dazzling mysterious Gatsby. The palpable apprehension is that the anointed is a stranger -- a deeply engaging, elegant, brilliant stranger with whom the Democrats had a torrid affair. Having slowly woken up, they see the ring and wonder who exactly they married last night.
Nearly five years later, after almost four years in the intense spotlight of the presidency, it's remarkable and, to use Krauthammer's word, eerie, that we still don't really know Barack Obama, and the Gatsby comparison applies at least as much as ever. Mark Steyn:
In a post-modern America, the things that Gatsby attempted to fake – an elite schooling – Obama actually had; the things that Gatsby attempted to obscure – the impoverished roots – merely add to Obama's luster. Gatsby claimed to have gone to Oxford, but nobody knew him there because he never went; Obama had a million bucks' worth of elite education at Occidental, Columbia and Harvard Law, and still nobody knew him ("Fox News contacted some 400 of his classmates and found no one who remembered him"). In that sense, Obama out-Gatsbys Gatsby: His "shiftless and unsuccessful" relatives – the deportation-dodging aunt on public housing in Boston, the DWI undocumented uncle, the $12-a-year brother back in Nairobi – are useful props in his story, the ever more vivid bit-players as the central character swims ever more out of focus, but they don't seem to know him either. The more autobiographies he writes, the less anybody knows.
So let the Breitbart vetting continue.

One more flashback to 2008. Charlie Rose and Tom Brokaw, on the brink of an Obama victory, discuss how little they know about Barack Obama. It's comedy gold:
I don't know what Barack Obama's world view is.
    No, I don't either.
I don't know how he really sees where China is.
We don't know a lot about Barack Obama and the universe of his thinking about foreign policy.
I don't really know, and do we know anything about the people who are advising him?
You know, it's an interesting question.

He is principally known through his autobiography and through very [aspirational?] speeches.
And I don't know what books he's read.
What do we know about the heroes of Barack Obama?

There's a lot about him we don't know.
By golly, these geniuses are right -- it is an interesting question! If only they knew some journalists who might ask it. (By the way, Brokaw moderated one of the presidential debates. In other words, he was the guy asking the questions. They have no shame.)

In the Land of Make Believe, Anything Goes [updated]

Mark Steyn on the "eternally shifting sands of Obama's biography":

When it comes to conspiracies, I'm an Occam's Razor man. The more obvious explanation of the variable first line in the eternally shifting sands of Obama's biography is that, rather than pretending to have been born in Hawaii, he's spent much of his life pretending to have been born in Kenya.

After all, if your first book is an exploration of racial identity and has the working title "Journeys In Black And White," being born in Hawaii doesn't really help. It's entirely irrelevant to the twin pillars of contemporary black grievance – American slavery and European imperialism. To 99.99 percent of people, Hawaii is a luxury vacation destination and nothing else.

Whereas Kenya puts you at the heart of what, in an otherwise notably orderly decolonization process by the British, was a bitter and violent struggle against the white man's rule. Cool! The composite chicks dig it, and the literary agents.
Read the rest. It seems Breitbart's vetting is bearing some fairly predictable fruit, given Obama's well-established towering narcissism and problematical relationship with the truth.

For more analysis see Erick Erickson's Barack Obama, A Composite Kenyan and Roger Simon's Mystery of the Kenyan Birth. The latter mentions in passing:
(Obama, of course, is a liar either way.)
I was thinking more along the lines of "phony" or "fraud." When you make things up about the fundamentals of who you are and where you came from, that's some serious pretending. Pathological, even.

The lazy, in-the-tank liberal media gets a good deal of the credit for the ascension of this international-man-of-mystery to the presidency. For recent examples of the Obama media at work, read Michael Walsh's Don't Let's Be Beastly to the Democrats. (And don't miss the musical selection at the end, which makes for a nice little history lesson for the kiddies. Mine enjoyed it immensely.)

Steyn also updates us on US Senate candidate (at least she was last I checked) Elizabeth "Pow Wow" Warren's extended game of make believe:
The recipes from "Elizabeth Warren – Cherokee" include a crab dish with tomato mayonnaise. Mrs. Warren's fictional Cherokee ancestors in Oklahoma were renowned for their ability to spear the fast-moving Oklahoma crab. It's in the state song: "Ooooooklahoma! Where the crabs come sweepin' down the plain." But then the white man came, and now the Oklahoma crab is extinct, and at the Cherokee clambakes they have to make do with Mrs. Warren's traditional Five Tribes recipe for Cherokee Lime Pie.
Hold the mayo! In the few hours since Steyn's column went to press, we've learned that two of her "old Cherokee family recipes" appear to have been copied from the New York Times.

My absolute favorite part (with emphasis added):
Two of the possibly plagiarized recipes, said in the Pow Wow Chow cookbook to have been passed down through generations of Oklahoma Native American members of the Cherokee tribe, are described in a New York Times News Service story as originating at Le Pavilion, a fabulously expensive French restaurant in Manhattan. The dishes were said to be particular favorites of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Cole Porter.
Were they Cherokee, too? Why not?

    ***
Steyn follows up: Breaking! The House of Windsor is One of the Five Tribes
The Pundette wonders: “Were they Cherokee, too?

No. But, as Broadway’s first Native American composer, Cole Porter wrote about his Indian blood in his famous song, “I’ve Got Sioux Under My Skin”.

Actually, that last line quoted above briefly made me wonder if writing about American liberalism isn’t a threat to one’s sanity. Some societies are racist, some societies work hard to be anti-racist, but only in America does the nation’s most prestigious law school hire a 100 per cent white female as its first “woman of color” on the basis that she once mailed in the Duke of Windsor’s favorite crab recipe to a tribal cookbook.

    Pelosi disses the Cubs

The thousand injuries of Nancy Pelosi I had borne as I best could, but when she ventured upon insult . . .

Pelosi whacked the Cubs after a New York Times report that a superPAC funded by Joe Ricketts is planning to attack President Obama.

"This is all going to be funded by the owner of the Chicago Cubs [Ricketts]; well, I hope it's as successful as the Chicago Cubs," Pelosi told reporters today.

As the reporters laughed, Pelosi added, "They ain't got no chance of going to the World Series, and hopefully, just by exposing this it will...some people said to me 'I'm changing from being a Cubs fan after hearing that.'"
Not that it matters, but something tells me no one has actually said that to her.

Brave New World gets braver in Ottawa

If you wonder whether it's still possible to be shocked by the post-sexual-revolution culture, go read Mark Steyn's The Ministry of Casual Sex and the Sun News story he quotes and get back to me. They're going after children -- not only teens and tweens, but toddlers as well (just as Huxley foresaw).

Here's what one parent had to say:

"It very quickly became apparent to myself and my wife that this was revolting," parent Patrick Meagher told QMI Agency. "They were encouraging kids to have multiple partners, have anal sex, and the words they used were inappropriate. This felt like a sexual agenda being pushed."
An agenda? I think he might just be on to something.

    More material for Kimmel

As my mother used to say, you can dress them up but you can't bring them anywhere.

At last month's White House Correspondents' Dinner,  Jimmy Kimmel was going to tell a Rick Santorum dead baby joke -- dead babies are always funny, right? -- but he consulted Jake Tapper first, who advised him to drop it. The joke, which was apparently too good to waste and has now been told, goes like this:
'Newt Gingrich's campaign is so dead Mitt Romney wants to baptize it and Rick Santorum wants to put it in a jar and show it to his kids.'
    Jake Tapper:
"I tried to help Jimmy with the temperature of the room," Tapper wrote in an email to Yahoo News. "And yes, I thought that joke would cause the room to turn against him, perhaps even causing a stampede, with the Hilton getting in on the tar and feather concession. Seeking to spare him a Rich Little-like reception, I offered my suggestions—such as they are—as to which jokes might bomb."
You may recall that Kimmel is the guy who said the president was "too cool" to make fun of:
“It's hard to make fun of Obama in general because he’s a cool character,” ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel, the “headliner” for this Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, told Reuters, insisting that “outside of his ears, there’s not a whole lot” to joke about.
Since Kimmel thinks dead babies are so hilarious, maybe he could have done something with this material from then IL state senator Obama:
SENATOR OBAMA: This bill was fairly extensively debated in the Judiciary Committee, and so I won’t belabor the issue. I do want to just make sure that everybody in the Senate knows what this bill is about, as I understand it. Senator O’Malley, the testimony during the committee indicated that one of the key concerns was — is that there was a method of abortion, an induced abortion, where the — the fetus or child, as — as some might describe it, is still temporarily alive outside the womb. And one of the concerns that came out in the testimony was the fact that they were not being properly cared for during that brief period of time that they were still living. Is that correct? Is that an accurate sort of description of one of the key concerns in the bill?
That "temporarily alive" shtick always cracks me up, because, you know, aren't we all just temporarily alive? It's funny cuz it's true. Or this:
As I understand it, this puts the burden on the attending physician who has determined, since they were performing this procedure, that, in fact, this is a nonviable fetus; that if that fetus, or child - however way you want to describe it - is now outside the mother's womb and the doctor continues to think that it's nonviable but there's, let's say, movement or some indication that, in fact, they're not just coming out limp and dead, that, in fact, they would then have to call a second physician to monitor and check off and make sure that this is not a live child that could be saved. [p. 32 of transcript]
"Limp and dead" -- great stuff! Just work in something about Obama's big ears and you've made comedy magic. Maybe next year.

    Obama's dilemma

The campaign needs the money. But can it afford the gay-for-pay downside? Chris Stirewalt explains:

All of this pandering may be necessary to keep Obama’s campaign dreadnaught moving ahead, but it comes at a cost, especially when so much of it is contradictory or confusing.
Obama has had a rough month and a half:
Some of the problems were just bad luck (hookers), some were just blunders (hot mic) but much of the rest has been about Obama trying to galvanize his base coalition and secure the massive donations he needs to finance the most expensive campaign in history.

His trip to New York on Monday was the best example yet. Obama delivered a groaner of a speech at Barnard College in which he did everything but shout “girl power” at the end. [transcript, video]

And then in an appearance on a left-leaning ladies chat show, ABC’s “The View,” Obama rhapsodized about his partial reversion to previous support for gay marriage in advance of attending a fundraiser with his party’s fundraising shop for “gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender” Democrats that featured Ricky Martin, he of Menudo, bikini briefs and “She Bangs.”

You need money to win Ohio, but it may not be worth the price of all this gay pride to get it. As the Times poll showed, a huge majority believe Obama’s rhetorical reversion was about politics, not a personal moral journey. Even those who are fine with gay marriage, may find it unseemly to see Obama waving the rainbow flag so vigorously in pursuit of cash.

While Obama was in New York, he also stopped by to scoop up some money from Wall Streeters, including some private equity folks -- an industry his campaign was simultaneously describing as parasites and vampires.

If you wonder why Obama felt the need to single out JP Morgan Chase and its CEO for praise despite a $2 billion shellacking the firm took on its own investments, fundraisers like these are a big part of the answer.
Which brings us back to the quote at the top.

The big gay fundraiser comes in June:
Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage prompted “Glee” co-creator Ryan Murphy, who is also co-creator of FX’s “American Horror Story,” to hold a dinner at his home on the same evening of a June 6 concert to be held for the gay and lesbian community. Pink is one of the scheduled performers, and according to organizers, tickets will range from $1,250 to $25,000.

Murphy and David Miller, Murphy’s fiancé, are slated to co-host the dinner that is expected to bring together entertainment industry supporters willing to pay $40,000 per couple, or $25,000 for those attending on their own. Guests will have the opportunity to be named additional co-hosts by pledging to raise $250,000 for the Obama campaign.
Thatsa lotta moola, but I'm cheering him on. If Obama's enthusiastic (gleeful?) pandering-for-pay to lefty celebrities and other "elites" loses him the election, it would be kinda perfect. Stay tuned.
