Celebrities-in-Chief

The Obamas are giving celebrity-worshiping America exactly what it wants: a glittering facade of "coolness." What's underneath it doesn't matter in the least. Mona Charen:

Mrs. Obama has been all over pop culture. Her Oscar outing followed hard on the heels of a mean “mom dance” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Her husband, meanwhile, has been golfing with Tiger Woods. Some members of what used to be (long ago, boys and girls, when non-cool presidents were in office) the adversarial press corps, joined forces to chant a question at the returning President Obama after his golf outing. They had lodged complaints with the press secretary about lack of access, apparently crestfallen that the White House refused to permit pictures of Obama and Woods on the course. Their shouted question wasn’t about the sequester, or Benghazi, or Syria, or Hagel; no, the pressies chanted in unison (Occupy-style) “Did you beat Tiger?” Their crush on Dear Leader is undiminished.
Read the rest. I watched about 40 seconds of Michelle's "mom dance" with Fallon. There's a term for persons who are overly interested in appearing on television and other media but it's too impolite to use here. But Mrs. Obama seems to be one of those persons. And the sad truth is that America loves it.

  1. I saw that "mom dance". Disturbing, and I didn't know which one was more unattractive: the guy in drag...or Jimmy Fallon.

  2. After Michelle's Oscar appearance, I felt the need to coin a term for Celebrity/ politicians like the Obamas: "Celebritician". I know they stopped celebrating all the the "unprecedented" accomplishments of the first black president back during his first term, but the amount of time the Obamas spend on The View, Letterman, Fallon, etc. is truly "unprecedented".

  3. I'm in complete agreement with you but I just couldn't bring myself to watch Mrs. Obama dance or watch the Oscars. I think my blood pressure was much better off for it.

  4. I don't get them, I just don't. I figure stars hang around with other stars mostly to promote themselves with publicity, but they'd probably prefer lower key gatherings with family and friends. Why would the first lady WANT to dance on TV? Why would she WANT to present an Oscar rather than just watching with her husband on the sofa?

But voters get the leadership they deserve. Next year she should host the Oscars, standing 20-feet-tall on that screen, picking all the winners and losers from among the pretty people.

  5. Well I must say I was more than just a little shocked that WashPo was none too pleased with her appearance on the Oscars. They said it had a Marie Antoinette quality to it. So maybe there is some hope.

  6. I just hate them. They think they're so cool. Wait... nevermind --- I was just having a High School flashback. Anybody old enough to remember Nixon on Laugh-In? Bob
