Hey parents, Les Miz is not a kids' movie

I think one usually prefaces the following with "I'm not a prude, but . . ." But I'd rather be an uptight old prude, that is, one who "may be perceived as being more uncomfortable than most with sexuality or nudity," rather than the mom who is apparently so "comfortable" with such matters that she brought her pre-teen kids with her to see Les Miserables this weekend. They sat in front of us.

One wonders what they made of Fantine's terrible trials, and how long those disturbing images will linger in their imaginations. Then there was the "comic relief" of "Master of the House," which furnished their psyches with (among many other things) a new "adult" vision of Santa Claus to dance in their impressionable heads from now on. Merry Christmas, kids!

Moving on to last night and Beyonce's halftime show. It's nothing new to have cheesy, sleazy entertainment in the middle of the Superbowl. But why do parents let their little ones watch it? This in particular surprised me. I just don't get it.

  1. What. There's only one sex scene in it. Granted it's an unappealing one, so there you go.
I've come to realize that a PG13 rating often means "only one sex scene."

    1. PG-13 generally means soft core porn. Hollywood uses this rating to mainstream the gutter and give the finger to pro- traditional value adults. Making it seem that sleaze is the entertainment norm for all teenagers and adults is a tremendous slap in the face of decent people. Also, when a decent film is put in this same category, it just muddies the water. Ron

  2. I wholeheartedly agree. I was disappointed when Catholic Relevant Radio reviewed Les Mis and ended the review by saying it was a "good one to bring the kids to" (Thank you, Drew Mariani)
Our family had a Ping pong tournament during the half time show skipping the show. And then there was Taco Bell, choosing to portray old people doing everything that is wrong with our culture in one lousy commercial. God help America!

    1. Unfortunately, everything today is raw or just for small children. What are pro-traditional adults supposed to look at? Catholic Relevant radio is trying to be sophisticated and is selling the Catholics out. Ron

  3. Maybe the mom who sat in front of us listened to Relevant Radio. smh.

  4. This post reminds me of the time the 7th grade English teacher at our Catholic school organized a Class outing to see Miss Saigon. A few of us parents managed to derail it, but what are these people thinking?

  6. Regarding the halftime show, we turned off the the TV. My wife and two girls performed a few trios singing and and my wife playing the piano. Then, two of our guests played a violin/piano duet. I'm sorry if it sounds schmarmy, but I could not help thanking God for the gifts he has given to me.

During all this, I turned to a friend and said, "Man, we could be watching Beyonce!" He just laughed...

  7. I am a member on Ravelry, an enormous online community for knitters and crocheters. This weekend, someone pointed out that two of the favorite patterns at that moment were: a sweater decorated with penises, and a hat, modeled by a man wearing nothing but the hat, "tastefully" kneeling so one could not see the body parts that were flaunted so freely on the sweater. Having a hat model showing his entire naked body seems like deliberately "pushing the envelope" to begin with. Why do we need to see more than the head wearing the hat, on a hat model? The consensus seemed to be, "Hey, my son has those body parts and they're nothing to be ashamed of" and "Kids see that stuff online all the time; what's the big deal?" In other words, our society seems to have become completely desensitized to nudity. Which was a goal, in certain circles.

  8. Our family highly recommends the Radio Theater Drama of Les Miserable from Focus on the Family!! It is a beautiful and powerful retelling of this redemption story, with no modern day ickies. The production is professional and high quality. We love to listen to it on our road trips!!

  9. Wouldn't that be "Prudette"?

  10. Why would decent adults want to see a sick perversion of this novel? The churches have sold out to the decadence of Hollywood. Ron
