How my mother did it: With Bell's Seasoning (which I can get here in Virginia) and One-Pie Squash (which I can't).
My mother never made pumpkin pie, always squash. And she followed the recipe on the One-Pie label. It's lighter, a little more custardy than your typical pasty pumpkin pie. But really very similar.
I hope they never change the packaging, outdated as it is. Just put the unresealable box in a ziploc after opening. Have a happy Thanksgiving.
